The dam on Lake Vermilion has been a significant, but perhaps underappreciated, part of Danville since it was built in 1925. But it is about to get a major upgrade.
Aqua Illinois area manager Bob Irvin says a renovation project will replace and update 11 gates on the dam. There also will be embankment and spillway modifications.
Aqua hopes to start the project early next year. The project has not yet been put out for bids, but Irvin expects it to be in excess of 14 million dollars.
The dam has gotten significant changes over the years, such as the extension of the gates in 1999 when the height of the lake was increased.
