The candidate for the local congressional seat knows he is a long shot, but he feels it is important to change the way things are going in Washington. Democrat Kevin Gaither is running against incumbent John Shimkus. Gaither told a candidates forum at DACC this week that this district is not getting enough federal help and an independent candidate is needed
Gaithers noted that when Shimkus first ran for Congress he said he would only stay two terms. He has now been in the office for 21 years.
Deb Dettmers represented Shimkus at the meeting. She said the congressman has been working on improving the economy

The race for Vermilion County clerk was a topic at the candidates’ forum this week at DACC. Incumbent Cathy Jenkins said she has accomplished the main goals she had for her first term.
Mary Catherine Roberson is the Democratic candidate for clerk. She said she was a part-time instructor at DACC and told students to get active, so she followed her own advice.
The general election will be Tuesday, November 6.
