The general election is a month away, and local residents got to hear from some of the candidates at a forum last night at Danville Area Community College. The candidates for the local seat in the Illinois General Assembly were among those participating.
Democratic candidate Cindy Cunningham said it was a time to change from the leadership of people like Governor Bruce Rauner who has spent much of his term in efforts to eliminate unions. She said that the people need to elect people who will protect the elderly, our schools and hardworking people.
The Republican candidate is Mike Marron. He was recently sworn into the post to replace Chad Hayes who left for another job. Marron says there are big problems in Illinois, but not insurmountable ones. He said the problems such as pensions look huge, but they can be solved with a measured plan of action for the future.
Other candidates at the DACC forum were for Vermilion County Clerk and the local Congressional seat.
The audio and video of the entire forum will be up on our website at wityradio.com
The issue of whether Danville should change its form of government took separate stage at the DACC forum. Questions from the audience provoked some spirited exchanges on the issue.
Alderman Ricky Williams was asked if his opposition to the proposal was because he wanted to run for the full time mayor position
Jim Mulvaney represented the group seeking to change Danville to a city manager form of government. He said there is no truth to the suggestion that the group also wants to reduce the number of aldermen
Danville residents will get to vote on whether to change Danville government to a City manager form with a part-time mayor during the November election.
