Danville City Council members are trying to find ways to pay a half million dollars in overtime expenses. The fire department is running about $234-thousand dollars over what was budgeted. And the police overage is $274-thousand dollars.
The Council was told that if the City of Danville succeeds in getting a federal SAFER grant it would help with the fire department’s overtime during the grant period. Council members were also told the vacation season is almost over, and that should also help. Firefighters union leaders have said that if the city hired more firefighters, it would save money in the long run by reducing overtime expenses.
