A high speed motorcycle chase that started in Danville ended with a crash on Interstate 74.
Police responded to the Citgo Gas Station, in the 1200-block of North Bowman for an intoxicated person to be removed from the business. The suspect, 33 year-old Zachary Blakeney of Mahomet, fled before officers got there. Shortly thereafter they found the motorcycle laying on its side near the intersection of Bowman and Crestview avenues. When officers approached the driver, he took off.
A pursuit followed with police cars. Authorities say Blakeney drove “in a reckless manner, disobeying traffic control devices and driving at a high rate of speed,” approaching 100 miles per hour.
Officials say Blakeney got on I-74. There he continued reckless driving including driving in the grass median, passing vehicles on the right hand shoulder and speeding. When Blakeney approached a construction zone the motorcycle struck the rear of a vehicle in the left lane. The people in the car weren’t hurt.
Blakeney was airlifted to a hospital. His condition has not been released, but police say he is expected to survive. State police trooper Tracy Lillard said the biker is being charged with driving with a suspended license and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
