The group trying to change the form of Danville’s city government has gained the number of petition signatures it needs. Pat O’Shaughnessy, one of the group’s leaders, said volunteers spent the weekend gathering more signatures to make certain there were extra names. The group wants to change Danville from a mayor/ aldermanic government to a city manager/Alderman form. A mayor would still be elected in this form, but the post would be part-time.
O’Shaughnessy says the next step is to present the petition to a judge to get it placed on the November ballot.
Moving Danville Forward group has scheduled its first community forum about the change. It will be Wednesday, May 30 at 6 p.m. at the Palmer Arena in Room 154. There will be two speakers at the forum open to the public.
Steve Carter is the retired City Manager from the City of Champaign. He will share his 40 plus years of experience as a City Manager. Carter is the Senior Advisor for the Illinois City and County Management Association and is chair of the Willard airport Advisory Board.
The other speaker will be Dr. Charles A. Hantz, Professor of Political Science at Danville Area Community College. He is the author of a paper titled “The Promise and Performance of the City Manager.” His findings were one of the catalyst of the committee to propose changing the form of government in Danville.
WITY will broadcast the forum and will be video streaming the event on its website.
