Members of the Danville Housing Authority are being asked to perform double duty. They also will serve as the board for the Vermilion County Housing Authority.
County Board Chairman Mike Marron says this will not merge the agencies, but allow the commissioners to serve in dual roles as commissioners. He says this will also allow for consolidation of government and cost savings while preserving the County’s input into housing matters. The County has also received assurances from HUD that the new Board will be indemnified from any liability associated with the issue of the loan which brought this issue to a head. The past Vermilion County Housing Authority resigned over a pending legal matter involving a loan. The former head of that board took out a loan, and HUD said federal money cannot be used to repay it. The bank went to court to seek the money it is owed. County and federal officials are working to find a solution to the loan issue.
The new arrangement will not change any residency opportunities in either the County or the City. Residents in Danville can stay in Danville and the residents of the County can stay in the County.
