Mary Thompson has never sought any recognition for her 30 years of volunteer service in the Danville community. But she got her well-deserved recognition as she was honored as the 2018 AMBUCS First Citizen. Thompson told those at the banquet that she is humbled by the honor. Thompson was chosen by the AMBUCS for her more than 30 years of volunteer work in the community.
Thompson has directed the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration for some 20 years. She also has given many years of volunteer service to Faith in Action, Meals on Wheels, the Presbyterian Church, CRIS, Human Relations Commission and the local hospital.
She also has been a caregiver for people and a wonderful volunteer cook for people and organizations in need. Thompson is the 85th recipient of the AMBUCS award and the first African-American female honoree.
